Juan Ponce de León Landing
Dedication April 2, 2005

700 Long Point Road, Melbourne Beach
HISTORIC INTEREST

The park commemorates the epic 1513 voyage of Ponce de Leon and his landing on the shore of Florida on April 2 and at the exact site of the park. Ponce de Leon's 7,980 nautical mile exploration into unknown waters set the stage for the subsequent European colonization of the USA. But that significant historical fact has been lost in the categorically untrue reports by past historians that he was a vain old conquistador looking for a fountain of youth.

Colonel Douglas T. Peck, a notable Florida historian and principal speaker at the park dedication on April 2, 2005, concluded from comprehensive historical research that Ponce de Leon was not looking for a fountain of youth, and that he landed near Melbourne Beach—125 miles south of the previously accepted site of his landing, St. Augustine.

Col. Peck, a retired US Air Force Command Pilot, has been engaged in his avocation as a historian of early seafaring Spanish exploration for over two decades. Using his expertise as a professional navigator as well as a historian, Col. Peck re-sailed the voyage using Ponce de Leon's detailed navigational log to determine in an accurate and scientific manner exactly where Juan Ponce touched shore or anchored in his 7,980 nautical mile voyage. His published works on the voyage have appeared in many academic journals, including The Florida Historical Quarterly (1992), in his book "Ponce de Leon and the Discovery of Florida", in media documentary, A&E Channel, Ancient Mysteries, and is available on the Internet.

Juan Ponce de León, c.1460–1521, Spanish explorer, was the first Westerner to reach Florida. In 1493 he accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to America. From 1502 to 1504 he assisted in the conquest of Higuey (now the Dominican Republic) and was made governor of that province. After finding gold on Boriquén (Puerto Rico) in 1508, he conquered the island and was governor from 1509 to 1512. Hearing tales from the Carib of a wonderfully rich island called Bimini, said to be north of Cuba, Ponce de León secured a commission (1512) to conquer and colonize that land. A legend developed that he was seeking a spring with waters having the power of restoring youth. From Puerto Rico on March 3, 1513, with three vessels, he sailed north east through the Bahamas, sighting the Florida peninsula (which he took to be an island) late in March and landing at the Melbourne Beach site on April 2nd. Probably because his arrival in Florida occurred at the time of the Easter feast ( Pascua Florida ), Ponce de León named the land (which he claimed for Spain) La Florida. He turned south, and landed in what is now Brevard County while exploring the coast to Key West and up the west coast as far as Cape Romano.

Bare walls become canvas for beachside artist

Posted: 2007 Aug 24 - 00:26

By Gretchen Sauerman

Staff writer

MELBOURNE BEACH - When 20-year-old Jeff Noble sees large, barren walls, he sees opportunity.

The Melbourne High School graduate has transformed more than 20 such walls into magnificent murals.

"I've always been drawing," said Mr. Noble. "About three years ago, I saw something spray painted on a large wall, and I thought it had really good detail."

At the time, Mr. Noble decided he needed to practice the craft before creating one of his own.

"I built a wall in my back yard and started training," he said.

When not surfing or skateboarding, the teen devoted most of his free time to painting murals and graffiti art.

In 2006, Mr. Noble and several friends painted a record-breaking 1,044-foot canvas while at Melbourne High School.

"We had a crew that we formed through writing graffiti together," said Mr. Noble. "Since working on the world record scroll, I'll bring in my buddies (on other projects)."

Painting large murals and graffiti art is not without its hazards, he said.

Weather, especially rain, can delay projects and cause frustration.

"We had a friend in from California to help on the Satellite Beach skate park," he said. "We had a whole month, but it rained almost all the time."

Indoor projects pose their own hazards, said Mr. Noble.

"We have to worry about paint fumes and good ventilation," he said. "My mom has always been on my case about it."

Mr. Noble's parents, Jim and Linda Noble, have always supported him in his artistic pursuits, he said.

When not painting murals, traditional canvases or surfboards, Mr. Noble works part-time at a beachside hotel.

"But 80 percent of my time is painting," he said.

All that hard work is starting to pay off.

Mr. Noble's work can be seen at the Imago Gallery of Fine Arts in downtown Melbourne, the Catalyst Surf Shop in Melbourne Beach and in the lobby of BB&T bank in Melbourne Beach.

He recently completed murals at The Park, a new indoor skate park near downtown Melbourne and has two new murals at the Spessard Holland North and South parks in Melbourne Beach.

Frank Lanza, south area parks supervisor for Brevard County Parks and Recreation, asked Mr. Noble to paint the murals at Spessard Holland, and has been pleased with the results.

"I think the residents and tourists will appreciate his work," said Mr. Lanza.

County Commissioner Helen Voltz and her staff recently viewed Mr. Noble's work at Spessard Holland.

"The first thing I thought was 'Wow, this guy is really talented!'" said Ms. Voltz. "To take a blank wall and paint a mural from just a thought in his head with nothing to copy from is most definitely a God-given talent. I'm sure he will use it wisely."

Mr. Noble plans to continue to hone his craft with more hard work and lots of practice. He offers advice to other youths considering a career in fine arts.

"It takes a lot of time," he said. "Try to keep the work and your attitude positive no matter what you're doing."
